When was your first Walk for Music?
My first Walk was the virtual event in 2020, hosted by Corey DePina and Johnny Giraldo. It was so fun to watch, and I joined the ZUMIX board soon afterward. Everything was virtual because of the pandemic, which worked well for me since I live west of Boston.
How did you get involved with ZUMIX and Walk for Music?
I work for PricewaterhouseCoopers, and I participated in a program that matches nonprofits with employees who are interested in serving. I had to fill out a questionnaire about my interests–it felt a little like a dating questionnaire, honestly! Then I wrote a letter to ZUMIX, met with Madeleine and the board chair, and sat in on a couple of meetings before joining the board.
What made you want to join the ZUMIX board?
I played the clarinet throughout middle and high school, and I participated in a program similar to ZUMIX where I grew up in New Hampshire. That program had a huge impact on my community and my relationships, and gave me opportunities to travel as a young person. I wanted to help support those things for the students who are at ZUMIX now, and will be there in the future.
Describe your participation on the board.
I’m currently the board clerk, and I’ve served on a couple different committees. I was on the advancement committee for a while, and I’ve been on the Walk for Music committee for several years.
What do you love about Walk for Music?
I love the energy, and the joy. The Walk is really different than other events and walks I’ve been a part of, because it’s a whole community. You’re seeing full families come out–not just students, but their parents and siblings, too. I love starting out at the Firehouse, and seeing the performances by students and staff. Everyone is excited, and there’s face painting–it’s a great moment.
It’s really fun for me to meet ZUMIX people whose names I’ve heard in our committee meetings, or see students who have performed for the board. I also love the part at the end when we walk through the condo buildings near the waterfront, and everyone’s out on their balconies, cheering.
Tell us about getting your family involved with the Walk!
My mom loves to walk, and she’s always trying to find friends in her neighborhood to walk with her. It’s been a fun way for her to come down and participate, to see where I live and what I’m involved in. My cousins have also come with me, and my Nana, who passed away recently, so we will be walking in her honor this year. And this will also be the first year my son [born in 2024] is joining me.
Do you have a favorite Walk for Music memory?
Seeing Mayor [Michelle] Wu and walking with her in 2023 was really cool. My favorite recurring part is A Trike Called Funk. I love their energy so much. And I love when we take the photo at the Firehouse before we start–I’m always responsible for gathering the board members. The fun and excitement of rallying everyone is great.
Why do you Walk for Music?
